(bows to GM Dave) A GM Dave kind of Day -- when you know you've had one......
Beware of people who say they only work "the weekends"........................
Ok, it's bad enough to have to work a holiday weekend; but then to have to work with morons is worse.
I know rules have to be made and followed but, really, when you've gone along for 5 yrs doing things one way and it's perfectly fine, don't change it!
Working in a hospital on the weekend is bad, let's face it; but holidays are worse.
I had a really nice day going on this past Sunday. Memorial weekend; but not too bad, quiet, no emergencys. Life was good.
Call from a doctor; ok, no problem change the service to another MD --- hey I can do that.
Or more correctly, admissions can do that.
I called admissions to get it done just as I have for the past 5 yrs.
I need to get the service changed from Dr ---- to Dr ----- for this patient.
Oh, ok---um well do you have an order?
I need an order?
um yea well, it's a new policy; we have to have a written order.
When did this happen??
um well, I only work the weekends..... I don't know.......this is just what they told me.
Ok, I'll write you the order.
he didn't write you an order??
No, he phoned it in.
oh, ok and fax it to me.
Action taken and completed.............
Phone rings....... Well, I can't see the name of the patient or the room number --- could you write it on the order sheet and refax it??
Action taken and completed...........
New MD comes in to see the patient; writes an order to change the admit from 23 hrs observation (another blog subject probably one day) to a full admit. Ok, no prob there;
but this time I'm thinking, and I FAX the order in to admissions.
Ah ha!! Lesson learned!
Phone rings 10 minutes later.......
when was this order written??
well, I need a time on the order when it was written. It's a new policy.
It was written at noon.
well, I need the time on the order sheet.
I resist the urge to strangle this woman with the phone cord at this point........
I get the order and write "12 NOON" in red ink and underline it. Of course knowing that my sarcasm will partly be lost because the fax only comes out in black and white---darn!!!
Refaxed and thankfully problem solved and she never bothered me again that day.
Nice day saved.
I hate weekend workers ----they can't think-----and I hope they have more faxes than they can handle and change this idiotic new policy. What was so bad with the old way??
